Hollywood stars help prevent suicide after Twitter alert

Hollywood actresses Demi Moore and Nia Vardalos, star of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," police on Friday helped thwart a possible suicide attempt after being alerted to it through Twitter.
Moore and Vardalos were instrumental in police rushing to the home of an 18-year-old Florida man who had written a message on Twitter saying he had "messed up my life bad" and was "thinking about killing myself."
The suicidal man, who is not being identified by AFP, wrote a message addressed to Moore's Twitter account saying he was "about to go hang myself from a tree outside my house and end my life."
"I have no reason to live anymore," the man wrote, adding "I am going to send a live feed of me hanging myself. No one cares if I die or not. "
Moore, who is married to actor Ashton Kutcher and goes by @ mrskutcher on Twitter, the man wrote back asking if I needed help. I responded "yes."
Vardalos, who saw the exchange on Moore's public Twitter feed, called a suicide prevention center in Los Angeles Which contacted the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.
The police officer who arrived at the young man's home in Casselberry, Florida, around 2:30 said in his report that he found him "sitting at his computer desk crying."
His mother told the officer her is was "very emotional and diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder."
The police officer said the man admitted posting the suicide threats on Twitter and that he "did not know what he would do to himself without help."
He Was Placed in protective custody.
Moore posted a message on her Twitter account on Friday saying "Thank you for your help Twitterverse supporting someone in pain last night."
Varal acknowledged on her Twitter feed @ niavaralos that she had helped the Authorities reach the suicidal man.
"I called suicide line, connected to (Florida) police, gave his name + city, they saved him," she wrote.
She added that she was a "little shaken" but "want to say thank u Twitter for caring about a stranger in (Florida) last night."
It was the second time in less than a year that Moore was involved in preventing a possible suicide.
In April of last year, Moore reported a suicide threat to police in San Jose after a woman wrote on her Twitter account that she was going to harm herself.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart: Slapped on the Wrist

There was a bit of Internet buzz yesterday that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart had broken up, or at least taken a break from seeing each other.
But E! News has clarified its original report and now states the following: Rob and Kristen are very much together and quite happy, but multiple movie studio executives would like them to cool off just a bit.
"Let's just say Rob and Kristen got a slap on the wrist," said an insider. "Everyone, from their management to the studios involved in their upcoming movies, is worried [Rob and Kristen] will start to become... distracted."
This concern seems a bit misguided, considering how rarely the couple is actually seen together and how mature each side handles the relationship.
But there are a lot of jobs and a lot of money at stake on each actor's next film - The Runaways for Stewart and Remember Me for Pattinson - and sources say higher-ups wish to make sure that Pattinson and Stewart have their eyes on the proverbial ball.
Of course, these same suits will be pushing Robert and Kristen to travel everywhere together when it's time to promote Eclipse. It can't be easy to date in Hollywood.
Hang in there, you two!

American Idol – Season 9 Road to Hollywood Final Audition Episode

Hello everyone! One last episode of auditions. And this was just a “best of the rest” type episode. Most likely, they have a chance to see more of the contestants in Hollywood at this point, so they want to feature a few more of the singers from all of the 7 cities in this last episode. They mostly showed us Hollywood Bound singers and only a couple silly ones. I, for one, am thankful that the Auditions are over. I’m going to try to be brief with my thoughts on these folks, because we’ll see them again next week and half of them may be gone by then!
Here we go folks!
Hollywood Bound
* Jessica Furney – 20 From Kansas – She auditioned in season 8 and has returned with a makeover. Performed a song co-written by Simon and claimed to not be kissing up (yeah ok). The song was “Footprints in the Sand”. She sounded okay. The judges all thought she improved from last year. We’ll see soon enough!
* Amanda Shechtman – 19 from New York – She was the theater girl who was overdramatic. Actually has a decent voice but got overdramatic over the judges giving her constructive criticism. So they had fun with her, mostly Simon. From the previews, it looks like her drama will carry on into Hollywood week, so we can take a look then!
* Lee Dewyce – 23 from Illinois – Didn’t see much but they made a big deal out of people with instruments performing without. This was a guitar dude. Sounded pretty good on “Ain’t No Sunshine”.
* Crystal Bowersox – 23 – Another instrument girl. She sang “Piece of My Heart”. It sounded good. Not enough to judge her too much yet!
* Lacy Brown – 23 from Amarillo, Texas – I already like this girl because anyone should have been given a shot over Megan Joy last season. And Lacy was sitting next to her when they decided on that top 32 or whatever it was last season (36 maybe). Lacy sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in this audition and according to Randy had a nice tone to her voice. Maybe she’ll get through to the live voting this season for redemption.
* There was the onslaught of 16 year olds. These kids always have the odds stacked against them but in Hollywood, they always bring their A Game:
Rachel Hubbard Boerne from Texas
Thaddeus Jackson – All I remember is he had goofy hair.
Genesis Moore from Georgia – Well she was named after either the Bible, a science experiment in Star Trek II, or an old Sega System. She can’t be that bad right? And she was another unexpected individual doing some Carrie Underwood. And doing it well. We’ll see!
* Michael Lynche – 26 from Astoria, New York – You may have already heard about this one. He’s a father-to-be and maybe he’ll be a little better to his son if he ever tries out for a competition such as American Idol one day. This guy made it to Hollywood, and his father broke a confidentiality agreement with the local papers and told them that Michael made it to Hollywood. I’m not sure why they still showed Michael on this episode, since he’s been disqualified. Maybe things have changed and I didn’t hear about it. Regardless, I don’t think he would have been winning with the audition we heard. It was “Unchained Melody” and I was cringing during some of the longer notes!
* Didi Benami – 22 from Hollywood – She auditioned in memory of her best friend Rebecca who passed away 4 years ago. She sang The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” and did it pretty well. Very unique voice. My only problem is, that “uniqueness” reminds me of Megan Joy! And that cannot swing very well in her favor. I will say that she should better and seems less weird that Megan, so I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt for now!
* Aaron Kelly – 16 from orlando – Aaron lives with his Aunt and Uncle. He calls his Aunt, “Mom” because she is who raised him. He and his biological parents had problems keeping jobs when he was very little. So the Aunt/Uncle stepped in. He sang the Miley Cyrus tune “The Climb” and sounded really good on it. But of course, he is 16. But he’s a cute little kid and agree with Simon that he’ll get the mom vote given the opportunity!
* Hope Johnson – 19 from Arlington, Texas – Another horror story of a childhood where she had parents that couldn’t keep their pants on so they had a family of 80,000 (or 6 sisters and one brother). So, then they were poor and never ate dinner and stuff. I love how all of this stuff is always in the past. It’s never “I’m poor and I need this NOW to help my family. If you say no to me, you’re putting us on the street!” NOW THAT would be entertaining TV! Now, I’m sure it’s rough growing up like that. I would just like a current update. Like, is it relevant now? Is she still starving? I don’t want to vote for her under false pretenses! Plus, I don’t even think she sang that well, so I don’t really want to vote for her anyway! She sang “I hope you Dance” and we got a humorous bit of Randy singing to teach Hope how to hold out her notes. Maybe she’ll improve in the next round.
THE BAD ONES
Nothing too exciting here. There was the Fisher girl that auditioned 7 times previously and was a die hard Victoria Beckham fan. Not good! There was the 6 foot 8 17 year old who loves to swim but sings like a chipmunk. Loved the 1-2 punch: Kara “There is a small boy trapped inside of you” Simon “Either that or you ate one!” There was the naughty Kimberly Bishop who really was awful and a disgrace to TV And then there was Shaddaii Harris whose mother told her how great she was and Idol made us fall for the oldest trick in the book. We figured she’d be good and then she was hysterically bad. Ahhh good times!
But you know what kids? I am DONE with auditions! We’re moving on to Hollywood! And you know what that means? Oh yes, the arrival of our new permanent judge, Ellen Degeneres. And, the previews make her look like she’s pretty hardcore mean. We’ll see if that’s just a ploy to get us to watch. In any case, I’m glad this show is moving on to more exciting things. Hope you enjoyed my ramblings as always and I’ll see you next week!

Report: Kate Moss Engaged To Guitarist

Jamie Hince, guitarist for rockers The Kills, reportedly proposed to Kate on her 36th birthday, which was January 16, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.

Kate was working in Mustique, an island in the West Indies, when Jamie reportedly flew out to propose with a diamond ring he picked out with the help of Kate’s Top Shop boss, Philip Green. Kate designs a line for the fashion retail giant.

“It was the first time they had been alone together in quite a while and it was extremely emotional,” a friend of the couple’s told the newspaper. “Kate and Jamie are in a very good place, they already live together and this is the next step to settling down for good.”

No official announcement has been made by either Kate or the guitarist, but the two were spotted by the paparazzi kissing and cuddling at Gatwick airport in England after returning from the trip.

The supermodel, who broke on to the scene in a Calvin Klein ad in the ‘90s alongside Mark Wahlberg, was reportedly first introduce to Jamie in 2007 by Sadie Frost, the ex-wife of Jude Law.

Kate previously made headlines for her relationship with troubled British rocker Pete Doherty. She also dated Jefferson Hack, a magazine boss, with whom she has an 8-year-old daughter, Lila Grace.

On the Gilded Path to Oscar Night

The ever-affable Sandra Bullock, elegant in a red velvet dress and stilettos, was surrounded by a swarm of conspicuously underdressed journalists, leading an animated discussion about macaroons of all things. A few feet away under a crystal chandelier, “The Blind Side” director John Lee Hancock earnestly praised the actress while nearby one of the film’s producers Andrew Kosove gushed about having a “film in Oscar contention.”

Bullock’s Golden Globe win was still a few days away. And the “Oscar contention” still wishful thinking. But this bit of banal chatter is the sort of merriment that often paves the path to awards. Not that any publicist in her right mind would ever publicly admit that a couple hours of cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres in a dimly lit Beverly Hills restaurant could lead to filmmaking’s most coveted honor. Still, there seems to be a strategy that works. Hold enough of these gilded affairs, for instance, where the actors and filmmakers work the charm on select members of the press and a few gadfly Academy voters, and it can mean the difference between an Independent Spirit award and Oscar himself. At least, that’s the theory. This year, with the best picture category expanded to ten films and a complicated new vote-counting method, theories are all we’ve got.

To hear the veteran Academy members talk, scrounging up ten Oscar-worthy films is an enormous chore. Everyone seems poised to grudgingly thrust a statuette in James Cameron’s face and move on. “Filmmakers and executives are just furious and remain furious with Academy board’s decision,” said one longtime voter. “The [Academy] board has been defending its choice to everybody they run into. I just got an email from an Academy producer who is only going to nominate two films.”

Whatever. The Hollywood publicity machine loves a challenge. And at this point, that formidable force moves into what one studio Oscar consultant termed “Phase Two.” The Globes’ awards have narrowed expectations a bit. “Avatar” is the one to beat. It has two Golden Globes for best director and picture and racked up industry guild nominations for best picture (Producers Guild of America) cinematography (American Society of Cinematographers), direction (Directors Guild of America) and best original screenplay (Writers Guild of America). The Academy ballots are due Saturday. Two weeks from today (TUESDAY, Jan. 19), the Oscar nominations will be announced.

And then it’s all just a glittering downhill slalom to March 7. “It’s like the Tour de France,’” said the studio Oscar consultant. “You have to reserve your energy for the post-Oscar nomination part of the race. You’re asking yourself, ‘What else can we do? What else can we do again?’”

Sure, news of the starving Haitian earthquake victims, coupled with our nation’s 10% unemployment rate dampens the mood a bit. There have been reports of more semi-private parties, more filmmaker Q&As. The Hollywood Reporter last month declared it “no longer cool to throw a splashy, public event to hype an Oscar contender.”

And publicists are finding their jobs especially tough this year, because as one Oscar consultant put it, no one wanted to “spend the money, effort, and time to campaign a film that would conceivably be the seventh or eight or ninth nominee.” (Yet, with a broader best picture category, many more filmmakers expected to have a shot.)

“Moon” director Duncan Jones wasn’t one of the lucky ones. He angrily Tweeted in late December that Sony had omitted screeners of his film from its awards season packet send out to voters. “They say it costs too much for our little film,” he wrote. In desperation, he launched an online petition — seeking an Oscar nomination for the film’s star Sam Rockwell. It now has more than 3,700 signatures. (We’re big fans, Sam, but don’t hold your breath.)

For the top contenders, though, there appears to be plenty of time and money to go around. Studios still rely on the trades to run their “For Your Consideration” ads. According to the Los Angeles Times’ Tom O’Neil, each studio spent $200,000 just to send screeners to the entire 94,000-person Screen Actors Guild membership in an attempt to give their nominees a leg up.

Just last week, even Magnolia Pictures’ little documentary “Food Inc.” had scheduled a party at the upscale Italian restaurant, Campanile. And there have been no shortage of events honoring Jane Campion’s indie costume drama “Bright Star.”

Then there was that swag-bag faux-pas last month at the “Brothers” event held by Relativity Media chief Ryan Kavanaugh in which party-goers, including Hollywood Foreign Press members and celebrity Academy voters, were given Blu-Ray players and DVDs of Maguire’s Oscar entry “Brothers.” (The next day, the HFP members returned the players. But that didn’t stop at least one disgruntled competitor tattling to Nikki Finke that it was the gifts, not Maguire’s publicist Kelly Bush’s relentless lobbying that got Maguire his Globe nomination.)

Harvey Weinstein and Universal Pictures meanwhile haven’t exactly scrimped on promoting “Inglourious Basterds.” Producer Lawrence Bender held a big, star-studded party at his home for the film. Then a swank DVD release screening was held at Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema, complete with cute girls dressed as WWII era movie ushers. Before the film, Tarantino showed a series of specially edited “trailers” from old films that had inspired him to make “Basterds.” Later, guests went to the nearby Grace restaurant, which was turned into a vintage lounge complete with schnapps bar and DJ Bizzy spinning records.

Back at Bullock’s low-key soiree at the Il Cielo restaurant, her “Blind Side” co-star Quinton Aaron couldn’t entirely believe his luck.

“It’s been interesting,” said Aaron, who had apparently hit hard times after a couple small film roles in Michel Gondry’s “Be Kind Rewind” and the Channing Tatum movie “Fighting.” “A year ago today, I was living in a house with no food, no water, no lights.”

He towered over the rest of the crowd, beaming about the night before at the premiere of “The Book of Eli.” Rosario Dawson had hugged him. Gary Oldman congratulated him. He got a picture with Denzel Washington. Best of all, he stood eye-to-eye with Magic Johnson. “We’re almost the same height,” he said.

“I’ve watched ‘Entourage,’” Aaron said, referencing HBO’s comedy. “But to actually be in the moment and be the main reason for people coming to something. It’s almost indescribable.”

Jennifer Lopez may join Madonna as ‘Glee’ guest star – as a cafeteria lady

Jennifer Lopez may soon be serving up sloppy joes and milk on “Glee.”
The sexy singer hopes to guest star on the hit Fox series about a high school show choir, the L.A. Times reports – and they have an usual casting idea in mind.
“I have a meeting with Jennifer Lopez in a couple weeks,” “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy told the Times at the Golden Globes after the show won for best TV comedy. “She wants to come on. We want her to be a cafeteria lady.”
Executive producer Brad Falchuk confirmed to E! Online that the musical-comedy drama and Lopez are in talks.
“Discussions are ongoing and we haven’t gotten into the episode(s) she’d be appearing in,” Falchuk tells E! Online.
If Lopez lands a spot, she won’t be the only star to spice up the set of “Glee.” Cast members are also making way for Madonna.
“We have a huge, all-girls Madonna song and dance number that we’re doing tomorrow,” Lea Michele, who plays Rachel Berry on the show, told E! on Sunday.
“I think the fans will not be disappointed in the Madonna episode,” she adds. “It’s big and it’s powerful, and the characters who are interacting together are not the ones you would expect. I feel like with each episode everything keeps escalating to a new level.”
Michele is also “rooting for Justin Timberlake” to make a special appearance. “Aside from being an incredible singer and dancer, he’s also a fantastic comedic actor, and that is a great cocktail for being on ‘Glee,’” she told E!. “And I think he and Matt [Morrison] (who plays glee club director Will Schuester) would have a fantastic dance-off.”

Why Did China Kill Avatar

Google isn’t the only American commodity being driven out of China. Avatar, James Cameron’s highly successful and critically acclaimed sci-fi epic, will be pulled from all 2-D screens in China by this weekend, according to Chinese media outlets.
Although 3-D and IMAX versions of the film will continue, the majority of Chinese movie theaters are not equipped with 3-D technology. As a result, the movie will be pulled from 1,628 movie screens across the country (compared to only 800 3-D and IMAX cinemas). Avatar will be replaced with Confucius, a domestically produced biopic about the renowned Chinese philosopher. Why?
Avatar generated record-breaking profits in China, earning $76 million in Chinese ticket sales so far. The film’s financial success, however, may have led to its demise. Several reports from both the mainland and U.S. indicate that the government wants to promote and protect the domestic film industry. Currently, only 20 films can be imported per year, in order to reduce foreign competition. These films can only run for 10 days and are often curtailed during a major holiday, giving domestic films a significant market advantage.
Avatar’s resonance with Chinese audiences also may have prompted government intervention. In the film, humans attempt to conquer the alien-inhabited world of Pandora, which contains a mineral that the Earth desperately needs. Many Chinese citizens see a close parallel to their own lives, as urban developments and projects such as the Three Gorges Dam force them off their land. Perhaps the government is worried that the ensuing violence on-screen may incite violence off-screen as well.
At first glance, the decision to pull Avatar is not exceptional. The film has indeed lapsed its 10-day run and a holiday — the Lunar New Year — is approaching. In addition, foreign films often contain themes that the government is not fond of. What is exceptional is the timing. A week after Google threatened to leave China, the Chinese government shows no signs of changing its restrictive censorship policies. I don’t think it is mere coincidence that Confucius — a state-sanctioned, state-produced movie about one of China’s most beloved and patriotic figures — will replace the controversial Avatar. By canning the most successful movie of all time in China, the government shows little concern for free markets or its consumers. Ignoring Chinese consumer demand for Avatar and bait-and-switching it with state propaganda may incite the very criticism that the government seeks to avoid.
